Geographic location: North Raccoon River watershed to the Des Moines River

Brief activity description: The NRWA is an all-volunteer organization dedicated to preserving and enhancing the North Raccoon River and its watershed. The NRWA holds monthly educational meetings, organizes cleanup activities and water quality snapshots. It has sponsored a paddler festival in Adel, Iowa and initiated a North Raccoon River Water Trail. The members are also engaged in policy initiatives.

We also are improving paddlers access and enjoyment of the river. We are speaking for the river and encouraging appreciation and understanding the river ecosystem.

Lead organization(s)/organizer(s): The NRWA was founded in March of 2005 by seven neighbors and friends interested in improving the river.

Other partners and participants: The NRWA seeks no grants but will work with any organization which truly wishes to improve the river and the watershed.

Timeline/duration: We began in March of 2005 and have a ten year plan.
Projected or real startup time: We are nearly two years into our plan.
Projected ending time or goal deadline: We have a ten year plan, however, we are planning to be perpetual.

Follow-up activities that will/might result from this activity: Systematic on-going water quality testing. Elimination of all trash. Reduction in nitrates, phosphorus and siltation. Establishment of a water trail. Improved fishing and hunting. Increased plant and animal quality and diversity. Improved policy. Increased membership and a sustainable organization.
